Facial Mapping // Your Body's Natural Road Map

Facial Mapping // Your Body's Natural Road Map

Our skin-the largest organ-is often the tip of the iceberg to what could be going on internally. Often, your skin issues and concerns are potentially reactionary due to an internal imbalance. Facial mapping is a well-known and widely used diagnostic tool used in Chinese medicine-designed to act as a guide, helping us link our skin concerns to the root of the problem.

For example, you may be experiencing acne on your cheeks...facial mapping would tell us this is due to an imbalance in your digestion.

While there is no direct evidence that skin breakouts correspond to organ imbalances... this approach can be helpful in offering an overall idea of what may be going on internally.

Here are a few areas of the face and what they're thought to be linked to internally-

In-between Eyebrows - Liver

The liver is responsible for: removing toxins from the body, resisting infections and regulating blood clotting. If this organ is imbalanced, you could be seeing acne in-between your liver due to a build up of stress or toxins.

Foods that are known to support the Liver:

  • Garlic, Onions, beetroot, apples, artichokes
  • Supplements: milk thistle, dandelion, and licorice

Under Eyes - Kidney

The Kidney is responsible for cleansing the blood of toxins and transforming waste into urine. When not working properly, harmful toxins and excess fluid build up in the body, which could include symptoms like: fluid retention & facial swelling. You could experience darker under-eyes due to not being properly hydrated.

Foods that are known to support the Kidney:

  • Leafy greens, Omega-3 fatty acids, berries, water

Cheek Region - Digestion

Your digestion system is a source of elimination for breaking down foods. When your digestive system is imbalanced and cannot function properly, your cheek area will often reflect this.

Foods known to support Digestive System:

  • Yogurt, apples, chia seeds, kombucha, whole grains, papaya

Chin - Hormonal / Endocrine System

Hormonal imbalances are often cause the skin to breakout, specifically in the chin region. The Endocrine System uses hormones to control energy levels, reproduction, and growth & development.

Foods known to support Endocrine function:

  • Vitamin B5 & B6
  • Lentil beans
  • Avocados
  • Sweet potatoes

A balanced and healthy diet structured to your specific dietary needs will reap skin benefits. The way you take care of yourself on the inside, will reveal itself on the outside. For some, facial mapping could help pinpoint dietary concerns and aid in a better treatment plan when approaching skincare.

While we find facial mapping helpful for some skin concerns-and believe it to be a great diagnostic tool, we are not medical professionals & recommend you see a doctor to accurately diagnose and treat you.
